Project Overview

Fearless Flights is an interactive iPad playground designed to support people who experience anxiety when flying. Inspired by my own personal journey, the app blends storytelling, accessibility, and emotional well-being into a playful experience. Users follow Gabriela, a character who loves to travel but struggles with the fear of flying, while completing guided activities that build confidence before and during the flight.

Design Process

  1. Research

To ground the experience in real coping strategies, I conducted exploratory research by watching videos and reading materials from pilots and psychologists. I wanted to understand how professionals reassure anxious passengers and what techniques could be adapted into a digital experience.

From this, I identified three key approaches:

Rational reframing – simplifying complex situations, e.g., explaining turbulence as “like driving on a bumpy road.”

Grounding techniques – using breathing exercises to manage anxiety.

Positive reinforcement – encouraging users to repeat calming phrases.

These insights directly shaped the narrative and UX flows.

2. Ideation & Storytelling

I sketched early concepts exploring how narrative could be used as a design tool. Instead of simply delivering exercises, I designed an interactive story where users guide Gabriela through her flight journey:

  • Before boarding: breathing exercises with visual animations.

  • In-flight: managing turbulence with the support of the flight attendant.

  • Personalization: choosing a destination (San Francisco, Paris, or Cairo).

The story balances vulnerability and empathy, helping users feel less alone in their fear.

3. Prototyping

I moved from low-fidelity sketches to mid- and high-fidelity prototypes in Figma, iterating on flows, accessibility, and visual style.

  • Breathing exercise: animated expanding/contracting circles guided by the 4-7-8 technique.

  • Calming phrase: users handwrite their own mantra using PencilKit, which later reappears during moments of turbulence.

  • Immersion: subtle shaking animations simulate turbulence, while audio feedback reassures users.

Accessibility was central: I prioritized clear visuals, calm animations, and simple navigation so the app feels approachable even in stressful moments.

4. UI Design

The visual style uses soft colors, rounded shapes, and clear typography to evoke calmness and safety. UI elements were designed to feel intuitive and supportive, avoiding clutter and overstimulation.

Impact

Fearless Flights not only helped me explore the intersection of storytelling and UX/UI design, but was also recognized by Apple as a Swift Student Challenge 2025 Winner, highlighting its impact and innovation.
