Letter Capsule

Letter Capsule set out to make self-reflection more engaging by letting users write letters, add photos and videos, and send them to their future selves. I designed an intuitive experience that blends journaling with AI-generated prompts to inspire creativity and emotional growth.

Project Overview

Letter Capsule is an app that promotes self-awareness and motivation by allowing users to store and revisit meaningful moments through writing, photos, and videos.
The app transforms self-reflection into an emotionally engaging experience — helping users capture the present and connect with their future selves.

More than a journaling tool, Letter Capsule blends emotion, technology, and personalization to encourage people to pause, reflect, and nurture their own growth.

My Role

As the UX and UI Designer, I was responsible for:

  • Designing intuitive flows for creating, editing, and scheduling memory capsules.

  • Structuring the information architecture to make navigation effortless and emotionally guided.

  • Contributing strategic ideas to differentiate the app from similar products identified during the benchmarking phase. Letter Capsule goes beyond traditional journaling: users can also send photos and videos to their future selves, adding a visual and emotional layer to memory-making.

  • Designing the onboarding experience, where users select up to three interests (from twelve categories such as sports, food, cinema, music, fashion, games, nature, science, travel, books, art, and technology).

  • Integrating AI-powered prompts based on the user’s chosen themes, helping reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed and encouraging consistent reflection.

  • Refining microinteractions and visual feedback to evoke emotional engagement without overwhelming the user.

  • Prototyping and testing the notification experience, ensuring that receiving a “letter from your past self” felt meaningful rather than intrusive.

Problem

Traditional journaling apps often rely solely on text and require users to find their own motivation to write — which can lead to inconsistent engagement and emotional fatigue.
Many users abandon these apps because they feel uncertain about what to write, or because the experience lacks emotional resonance and personalization.

Opportunity

Letter Capsule seeks to reimagine self-reflection as something guided, visual, and emotionally intelligent.
By combining writing, images, and videos with personalized AI prompts, the app helps users capture memories in richer ways and return to them with new perspectives — bridging the gap between present and future selves.

User Journey

During onboarding, users select up to three topics that resonate most with them — such as travel, music, or art.

  • Based on these preferences, the app suggests AI-generated reflection prompts to help users begin their first entry without creative pressure.

  • Users can create capsules with text, photos, or videos, set a future delivery date, and even personalize how they’ll be reminded of it.

  • When the chosen date arrives, the user receives a notification from their past self — inviting a moment of reflection and gratitude.

  • Over time, this cycle of writing, waiting, and revisiting fosters emotional growth and self-awareness.

My Approach

Research & Benchmarking
Analyzed popular journaling and habit-tracking apps to identify gaps in emotional design, engagement patterns, and usability. This helped define how Letter Capsule could stand out by integrating multimedia entries and AI-guided writing.

Ideation & Flow Design
Created low- and mid-fidelity wireframes to explore emotional tone and usability. Emphasized minimal friction between creating a capsule and scheduling its delivery.

AI Integration
Collaborated on defining how the AI prompt system would operate — ensuring suggestions were empathetic, personalized, and non-intrusive, reinforcing the app’s supportive tone.

Accessibility & Retention
Focused on color contrast, legibility, and clarity. Designed microinteractions and notifications to make the act of revisiting memories rewarding and emotionally grounded.

Goals

Help users reflect on their lives through guided, multimedia storytelling.

  • Use AI personalization to reduce creative pressure and promote consistency.

  • Create a visually calm and emotionally engaging experience.

  • Encourage long-term retention by making reflection feel rewarding and personal.

What I’ve Learned

Designing Letter Capsule taught me how AI can play a key role in enhancing user engagement and creativity when applied thoughtfully.
Through this project, I realized that many users abandon journaling experiences not because they lack motivation, but because they feel overwhelmed or unsure of what to write.

Integrating AI-generated prompts proved to be a powerful way to re-engage users, helping them overcome creative blocks and transform self-reflection into a guided, enjoyable process.
It also demonstrated how technology and empathy can coexist — where AI acts as a supportive companion that inspires creativity.

This experience deepened my understanding of how UX design, writing, and emotional intelligence intersect to create digital products that are both meaningful and sustainable in the long term.
